| Bronson | pop place | 31.343889, -094.013333 | Bronson, Texas, a populated place, is located on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad and at the intersection of State Highway 184 and U. S. Highway 96, nine miles west of Hemphill, Texas, in west central Sabine County. Settlement began as early as 1895 when John Henry Kirby began buying stumpage rights on large tracts of virgin timber land. Named for Samuel Bronson Cooper, the community became a sawmill town of Kirby Lumber Company by 1902. A post office opened that year and several businesses and a newspaper began operations. A Masonic lodge commenced meetings in 1904 and a school district was created in 1905. A state bank was chartered as early as 1907 and two churches, Baptist and Methodist, began to hold services. Bronson reported a population of 1,000 by 1910. Peak population was reached in the 1920s when 1,200 inhabitants lived there and highways were built to connect Bronson to other communities. In the 1930s population declined with the advent of the Great Depression and the bankruptcy of Kirby Lumber Company. However, the town survived, even though the bank closed and the school district later consolidated with Pineland district. By 1998 the incorporated community of Bronson reported a population of 338, served by 24 businesses.
