Our Project
Texas Genealogy, Free for Everyone
TXGenWeb is a grassroots, all-volunteer genealogical and historical project and a proud part of the USGenWeb Project. Our goal is simple: help make Texas genealogy information available online, freely and without a subscription.
The heart of TXGenWeb is local. Texas has 254 counties, and our county websites bring together records, local history, research tips, volunteer assistance, surname information, library resources, and other materials connected to the places where Texans lived.
What We Do
TXGenWeb provides a statewide gateway to free Texas genealogy resources while volunteers maintain county sites and special collections.

- Provide statewide records and research resources.
- Encourage volunteers to preserve local genealogical information for future researchers.
Part of USGenWeb
The USGenWeb Project grew from a volunteer effort begun in Kentucky in 1996. The idea quickly expanded into a nationwide network of state and county genealogy websites.
TXGenWeb became the Texas branch of that effort in the summer of 1996 and has remained volunteer-run ever since.
Our Volunteers
TXGenWeb exists because volunteers contribute their time, knowledge, records, and technical skills. County Coordinators are at the center of the project, supported by statewide volunteers and other helpers.
There are many ways to participate, from maintaining a county website to transcribing records, providing lookups, helping with websites, or contributing genealogical material.
Project Leadership
TXGenWeb is led by an elected State Coordinator with the help of Assistant State Coordinators and other appointed volunteers who manage specific parts of the project.

More Than 30 Years of TXGenWeb
TXGenWeb began in 1996, when Edward Hayden answered the call for volunteers and established Texas as part of the newly forming USGenWeb Project. By the end of that year, 200 of Texas's 254 counties had already been adopted by volunteers.
The project has continued through changing technology, new volunteers, statewide projects, annual meetings, preservation efforts, and decades of freely sharing Texas genealogical information.
