| Coryell County | civil | 31.383333, -097.800000 | Coryell County was created by an act of the Legislature passed by the Texas Senate 15 March 1854. In 1856 bids were received to build the first courthouse, it served for about 25 years. The present courthouse was designed by W.C.Dawson, Architect, built by Toim Lovell. The cornerstone was laid 2 Oct. 1897 and the building was delivered to the county 18 July 1898. The county was named for James Coryell who thought "the land the most beautiful he had ever seen" and took out a headright on land on the creek, later named for him. In 1885 the name of the Post Office was changed to Evant. Lying in the westernmost point of Coryell county, it's school district contains 238 square miles of Coryell, Hamilton and Lampasas Counties. The downtown square of Evant consists of many native rock buildings with businesses including Bank, Lodges and shops. There are stations, grocery stores, churches and many homes in the Evant area. | Jonesboro | pop place | 31.618570, -097.878367 | Located 19 miles Northwest of Gatesville on Hwy 36 and on the Hamilton County line, Jonesboro is an old settlement. In 1866 the Jones brothers erected a steam sawmill and grist mill on the Leon River on the Coryell and Hamilton County line. The village grew after the Civil War and was called Jones Mill, the first Post Office bore that name. In 1871 a packer for a wholesale dealer addressed a box of goods to "Jonesboro, TX". That name suited the people and soon the Post Office name was changed. The town suffered from Indian raids in 1869 and in 1871 since it was on the frontier. After that the town grew peacefully until by 1890 there were 300 to 400 people living there. In the early 1930's state highway 36 was placed through the town, and by 1939 Jonesboro had a telephone system. The Grove is an agricultural community. In 1869 it had two general stores, two wagon shops, a mill, a gin, a Post Office and 4 churches. By 1900 it was one of the largest towns in the county with 4 doctors, 3 general stores, a school, a cafe, shoe shop, lumber yard, blacksmith, two barber shops, a dentist, a coffin maker, a candy factory and a mattress factory. Due to the extensive growth of cotton in the area, this was a bustling village for several years, having 2 grocery sores, 2 general sores, 3 cotton gins, a newspaper, 2 doctors's offices, 2 banks, a drugstore, a hotel, 2 blacksmith shops, telephone office, photographic studio, grist mill and a millinery shop. Today the activity is centered in the fertilizer store, a very active commuity center and a Cemetery Association.
